softened sun

When the summer heat makes it to the triple digits
(it’s been 103, 104, 105, 106 here these last several days)
the tendency is to move indoors.
But, in our case,
we can’t, completely.
There is watering and weeding
and squash bug-squashing
and tomato-picking
that has to be done.
And porch-sitting
and guests to take on nature retreats.
So we go out anyway.
And we discover
cloud cover
a good breeze from the East
and that we can be in the shade
or even in the sun for a little while
and enjoy being outside
in the heat.

By not avoiding the heat completely,
retreatants at Turtle Rock Farm discover
the pond in the morning:
mirror-like on the south end,
glistening on the north end.
The sky in the evening:
a softened sun glowing through pink sky
and blue clouds.
Birdsong.
The breeze;
a 95-degree breeze feels like a whiff of heaven.
