I can never get enough
of the Great Blue Heron.
The moment I see it,
I stop in my tracks and be still.
A shy creature,
it lifts off
the moment it sees me.
Or,
it sees me before I see it
and I only get a glimpse
of a massive gray figure
flying silently overhead.
It lives in the neighborhood
along Doe Creek
and at the bigger ponds.
Last summer
it had a teenager in tow.
Spotting this beautiful creature
elicits such anticipation
and anxiety in me
that I can’t seem to relax
and enjoy
just a glimpse,
just a moment
in its presence.
