OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAEating from Ann’s hand

A few weeks ago
we watched a fascinating program
on PBS’s “Nature:”
My Life as a Turkey.”
It is the remarkable story of a man
who raised a flock of wild turkeys.
When they hatched from the incubator,
he imprinted with them
and became their mother.
So, ten days ago,
when the chicken eggs in the incubator
began to hatch,
Ann took each one,
held it close to her chest,
stroked it,
talked to it.
Now they let her hand-feed them;
they walk on her hands,
and they’re much calmer
than chicks in the past
living in the indoor coop.
A new chapter
in the raising-chickens story.
