Woodpecker Couple. One keeps watch
while the other excavates a hole for nesting

The Woodpecker couple
continues to excavate
a nest
in the Hackberry tree.
They’re pecking into a part of the tree
that is scarred.
One pecks,
tail-feathers sticking out from the hole,
then backing out
to spit out the wood chips,
while the other
watches
from a nearby branch.

Fresh wood chips
litter the ground
below the tree.

I pick up a few chips,
put them in a small bottle.
They feel sacred—
as in good,
precious;
as in I feel so fortunate
to have watched
how these got here.

This morning,
only one Woodpecker is in sight.
It hangs around the Hackberry,
feeding,
hopping around the branches.
I don’t know if its part
of the couple…
maybe keeping an eye on the nest;
maybe he’s a he,
as in she’s inside
the nest,
laying eggs in a soft bed
of fresh wood chips?
