It’s picnic time.
On a vacation,
a few years ago,
we ate every meal
outside
for two weeks.

Breakfast on Naxos

Since then,
we try to eat every meal
we can
outside, especially
this time of year.
Some of our fondest family memories
are of meals outdoors.
At the pondhouse,
there are round tables on the patio
overlooking the big pond.
We often linger in the evenings,
watching birds catch their supper,
diving for bugs on the water.

At the farmhouse,
there’s a small table
on the front porch
just the size for us—
though we often squeeze in one or two
friends.
For more friends,
we move a folding table
around the farmhouse yard,
depending on the breeze,
the shade,
or the sunshine.

Our biggest outdoor meal—
and the most festive—
is our annual Prairie Dinner
in the fall.

I love the intimate
outdoor gatherings around table
with friends,
family
in good-natured conversation,
eating thoughtfully-prepared food.
Most recently,
a group of friends that gathers—
indoors—
once a week,
came for our annual picnic
as Earth rolled up,
the sun disappeared
and the sky turned red.

Such sweet joy.
