There was something—
something big—
on the porch.
Big shadow.
I switched on the porch light.
And, to my delight,
it settled overhead,
just above the door.
I gasped
at the beauty.
Wings spread six inches wide,
a giant,

As dark as night,
this is the Black Witch Moth.
Bands of rich browns and blacks
mark its wings;
small, midnight blue eyelights
are almost hidden along the edge
of the upper wings;
showier blue eyelets
flash from the hindwings.

Such beauty
traversing the night.
