A pair of Scissor-tailed Flycatchers and a pair of Doves

Doves and Scissor-tailed Flycatchers, including one in flight

I have a sneaking suspicion
that the Scissor-tailed Flycatchers
are gathering
for the flight
to Mexico.
I see more these days
than I have all summer.
On last evening’s walk
I saw couples perched on utility lines
all along the road.
People-friendly as they are,
they stayed put,
their long tails stilled,
facing west
into the sun,
as I passed below.
And in the golden hour,
their salmon-colored breasts
glowed salmon-gold—
an image
to carry us through winter
until we catch sight of them again
early next summer.
