It’s a calm winter morning.
Sunlight glints
on the frost-coated,
dried, tan grasses.
I take deep breaths
of cold, clear, fresh air;
too, draw long
into the balm
of the simplicity
of this down-to-the-bones,
mono-chromatic winter palette.

When I finally come in,
the palette
brightens;
the contrast,
almost startles.
Summer remains:
Ferns and Shamrock,
still lush
in a sunny south window.
And then, foreign to this place,
four giant, gorgeous blossoms
of Red
explode
atop the lone stem
of an Amaryllis.

In both palettes,
indoors and out,
beauty,
balm.
I wonder though…
do I forsake
the gifts
of a prairie winter’s dormancy
in the salve
of green and bright?
