Having taken a look
at the headlines
then written checks
for fourth quarter estimated taxes,
I walk to the mailbox,
thinking about whether I will wear
a hoodie in church Sunday
to support those protesting
proposed legislation in Oklahoma
that smacks of injustice.
Into the black box go the envelopes
and I raise the metal red flag
so the carrier will know to stop.
As I turn around to return
to the house
I am suddenly seized
by the beauty of this day.
It is barely cold,
there is almost sunshine
and oh, the vast sky…
it sweeps up my anxious heart
and takes it flying
into the blue.
